A broadband technology that delivers high speed data links of up to 8Mbps (downlink) in theory   across existing copper wire telephone lines without affecting voice service.

High speed Internet access, send and receive email, transmit document, retrieve or download information and online games etc.

Merits

High data rate: Theoretically speaking, max. uplink speed can be as high as 640Kbps, downlink rate can be 8Mbps. Users can surf online, read news, play games or download pictures. They can even enjoy VOD by visiting our broadband website.

Dedicated bandwidth that is safe and reliable: Compared with shared network, ADSL connects with the equipment room of the broadband network, and users can enjoy dedicated bandwidth. ADSL uses CNC telephone network that connects to thousands of householdsCore network uses optic-fiber that covers the whole country, while all nodes use ATM broadband switch to process information. Information can be transmitted in a fast, reliable and safe manner.

Surfing online and making telephone calls at the same time. Through frequency division multiplexing (FDM), ADSL data signal and telephone tone signal are modulated in their own frequency without interference to each other. Unlike dial-up access, you can visit Internet and make phone calls at the same time. Furthermore, as data is not transmitted through telephone switch, ADSL access does not charge you  airtime fee that you will incur when you use dial-up access, it saves you money.
4   Easy installation: add ADSL to existing telephone line, only need to install an ADSL MODEM and a splitter.

Service Type
ADSL service breaks down into three categories: ADSL service for general public, ADSL service for corporate customers and the last one is for campus customers.

Access Rate
Definition: The rate at which a user’s modem is connected with broadband access server, not the effective bandwidth through which the data packet of a user is carried throughout the whole network and reaches the last server.

iii Access Model
Currently for general public users and campus users we only offer dynamic IP address analysis, while corporate users they can have either static IP address or dynamic IP address analysis.
Dynamic domain name system
DDNS):A service that correlate a fixed domain name with dynamic IP address, similar to the use of fixed IP. After the activation of DDNS service, domain name will be bundled with ADSL account through self-service system, then the user can have corporate domain name analysis by  logging onto the Internet via ADSL account number@bbn. For dynamic domain name access, however, roaming is not advisable.
Static IP address: When a user logs onto Internet through ADSL, network authentication system will assign the user a fixed IP address and guarantee that the whole network can visit this IP address. Access through static IP address does not support roaming.

Network Technical Indicators
i
Network Status Quo
At present ADSL network in Beijing from user to IP backbone network has three layers, namely access layer, service aggregation layer and service control layer which provide high performance broadband services.  According to the layout of telecom offices in Beijing and the characteristics of access optic-fiber, PSTN as well as the distribution of users’ telephone lines, we divide urban Beijing into 66 “Zones for Broadband Access Service”. That is to say
main terminal offices, and their module offices, exchange rooms will form a service zone for broadband access. BRAS of each service zone is in the central office, and every zone has one to three BRAS.
Our current ADSL network architecture in urban Beijing is: through telephone twisted pairwire a user is connected with DSLAM in the equipment room of the terminal office,  DSLAM uses Ethernet interface of  Mbps or Kbps to connect with BRAS through bare fiber
then BRAS will be connected with Beijing IP network through fiber in the form of IP. Suburb areas mainly use ATM uplink but where conditions permit, IP uplink is also available. (Currently for suburb areas only the newly built DSLAM offices in Changping and Shunyi county have IP uplink that is connected to ERX 1400.)
DSLAM FE (high speed Ethernet ports), for uplink port aggregation, 100M connects with 500 users of 512K; DSLAM GE( Giga Ethernet port), for uplink port aggregation, 1000M connects with over 2000 users of 512K. Downlink port for BRAS (FE or GE
≤4K, support VLAN (virtual Local Area Network), uplink port uses two GE to uplink to Beijing IP network.

Network Technical Standards
At present all Beijing ADSL broadband networks adopt G.992.1 standard which is as follows:
1.  DMT
Discrete Multi-Tonecoding technique that divide carrier frequency band into many sub-carriers
2.  Use OFDM or ECM echo cancellation method to allocate different carrier frequency band and sub-carrier for uplink and downlink channel in order to realize asymmetrical uplink and downlink bandwidth.
3.  Define the model of data rate adaptation of subscriber line.
4.  Data encapsulation at link level through ATM cell model
According to the definition of G.992 standard, the max. downlink rate for ADSL using this standard can be  6Mbps
max. uplink rate, 640kbps; but the real data rate depends on the specific line situation and service package a user chooses.
At the same time, ADSL network devices also support following standards:

Customer Access Network
 At present ADSL access model in Beijing is that a customer uses PPPOE software to dial up, then CPE modulates, and DSLAM aggregates to BRAS, thus realize the commencement , termination and management of PPPOE access. Currently through BRAS we use a comprehensive authentication system to authenticate, bill and restrict data rate of our ADSL service. (Please see the figure above)
ADSL station equipment and CPE are connected with each other through telephone copper wire, so fixed phone subscribers can have ADSL broadband access through existing telephone lines. According to test data and real usage, for the widely used twisted-pair copper line whose diameter is 0.4mm, ADSL 512K/1M is guaranteed for access distance within 3 km, and ADSL 2M is guaranteed for access distance within 2.8km.

ADSL service for general public
1. Availability
This service is available except for following :
1
Areas that are not covered by our ADSL service;
2
Areas covered by our LAN service;
3
Areas covered by our 201 campus ADSL service;
4
Our service system does not have user telephone number and user resource information(like private branch exchange etc.);
5
The applicant’s name is different from that of telephone owner;
6
You can only have either prepaid or postpaid service;
7
Businesses can only apply for ADSL service for corporate users.
2. Installation, Cancellation and Relocation
1
Postpaid users of ADSL service for general public:
a
Installation
Method 1: Go to our business office that serves your neighborhood to finish application procedure and pay service charges, you will get ADSL Internet account, user name and password.
Method 2: Apply to our agent and set a 6-digital service PIN number when you fill in the registration form, our employee will tell you your ADSL account number when he installs ADSL for you. For Internet password, please log onto www.bjtelecom.com.cn and click [online service] then [subscription processing] then click [ADSL self-help service], enter in your ADSL account number and 6-digital service PIN number set by yourself, then you can get your Internet password.(This method is not available for suburb users or those whose bill is paid by their companies.)
Method 3: call our customer service center 10060, and tell your personal information and the 6-digital service PIN number set by yourself, our employee will tell you your ADSL account number when he installs ADSL for you. For Internet password, please log onto www.bjtelecom.com.cn and click [online service] then [subscription processing] then click [ADSL self-help service], enter in your ADSL account number and 6-digital service PIN number set by yourself, then you can get your Internet password. (Currently this method is not available for changing ISDN into ADSL, adding ADSL to an ordinary telephone, or suburb users and those whose bill is paid by their companies)
Method 4: visit our online business office by logging onto www.bjtelecom.com.cn, then click [online service]—then [subscription processing] and choose the service you want, enter in your personal information and fill out the registration form. (Currently this method is not available for changing ISDN into ADSL or suburb users and those whose bill is paid by their companies)

Cancellation, relocation, and changing data rate
Please go to our business office that serves your neighborhood. At present prepaid user of ADSL service for general public can only have a data rate of 512K, and only our business offices in urban areas can process your application.
3. Documents Required
Users of ADSL service for general public: for application to our business office, your valid identification document; for online application or calling 10060, the number of your valid identification document; and registration form of users whose bill is paid by their companies should have corporate seal.
4. Activation Time
If all the resources required are in place, within 30 days after we have received your application.
5. Payment
1Postpaid users: Individual users can go to our fee collection centers or Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China Construction Bank, Bank of Beijing, China Everbright Bank and Hua Xia Bank or Bank of China. Users whose bill is paid by their companies can pay by bank collection or going to our fee collection centers.
2Prepaid users: Make prepayment or buy recharge card (fixed phone) at our business office that serves your neighborhood.
6. How to fill in our registration form?

Please carefully fill in each item on our registration form , and tick the “□” before the service you want to choose;

Individual user must provide the name and number of his valid identification document, and present the original document. Registration form of users whose bill is paid by their companies must have corporate seal;
3
For payment by bank transfer, users must provide payer’s bank name ( a Beijing bank), bank code, account name, bank code, and there must be financial seal of his company under the item “Corporate Seal”. What’s more, he should also provide the telephone number of contact person for payment.

Choose new installation, add or change into ADSL under the item “ADSL Service”;
5
Under the item “Data Rate” choose downlink rate (currently only 512 K available);
6
Under the item “Types of Monthly Subscription Charges” choose which type of subscription charges you want.

Go to the Communication Department of your school or university, fill out the application form and pay 100 Yuan deposit for MODEM, then the Communication Department will submit your application to the telephone office in your neighborhood.

If all the resources required are in place, within 30 days after we have received your application.

To initialize password, change your monthly service package, or suspense the service temporarily, you must go to our business office and present your valid identification document. The change of service package or temporary suspension takes effect in the following billing month.

You can inquire your bill or modify your password by visiting our website and providing your ADSL account number and PIN number.

To initialize password or change your monthly service package, you must go to our business office in your neighborhood and present a letter of reference from the corporation. If a user changes his service package before the end of a billing cycle, (only once is allowed each month), then his service package will be changed after his finishes the relevant procedure. He will be charged according to actual days he has used each service package.
Note: daily charges should be the monthly charges of this service package divided by the total days of this billing month.

Repair: 7*24hours to receive your fault report, and resolve a fault within 24 hours, the same is true with the situation where we need to go to user’s place to solve the fault.
